Investing, 2020 year-end



On the last day of 2020 my ROIC since 2002 was 377%

The S&P 500 returned 213% for the same period. 

Retirement: 50%, Brokerage: 50%

At the beginning of February I sold sixty percent of my TSLA shares at $185. Then at the end of February I bought TSLA again at $160, then at $70. 

In June I sold forty two percent of my TSLA shares. Then in September I sold thirty six percent of my remaining TSLA shares. At year end my remaining TSLA shares were forty three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 709% 

In November and December I bought TDOC at $196. At year TDOC was seven percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 0.8%

In September I bought WORK at $29.1. At year end WORK was my six percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 45%

In March I bought SQ at $44.6. At year end SQ was four percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 385%

In October I bought PACB at $12.3. At year end PACB was four percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 115%

In November I bought XOM at $36.9. At year end XOM was four percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 11%

In December I bought SPOT at $328. At year end SPOT was three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized loss of -3.8%

In March I bought PRU at $49. Then in September I sold twenty two percent of my PRU shares, and in December sold sixty one percent of the remaining shares. At year end PRU was three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 48%

In July I bought CERS at $7.15, then in September at $5.65, then in December at $7.05. At year end CERS was three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 5.2%

In December I bought CRSP at $147.9. At year end CRSP was three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 4.4%

In March I bought NVTA at $13.9. At year end NVTA was three percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 207%

In November I bought ERX at $14. At year end ERX was two percent of my portfolio with a total unrealized gain of 2%

In November I sold all of BRK shares for a total ROIC of 16%.

Investing, the early years (2002-2011)

On the last day of 2011 my total ROIC since 2002 was  48% , or a little over five percent per year, for nine years.  The S&P 500 returned over 70% for the same period. In the fall of 2002 I began investing by opening a ROTH IRA retirement account with approximately sixteen dollars. The funds were allocated to a diversified portfolio of funds managed by a financial planner. I contributed small amounts each year through about 2009.  In 2004 I opened a traditional retirement account through the federal government Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) to invest some of the tax-free combat pay I would collect while deployed to Iraq. I contributed approximately three dollars for the year.  In 2005 I contributed about another three dollars of combat pay to the TSP and a nominal amount to the ROTH IRA.
